Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Also known as: answer optimization
FoundationsPractitionerSenior lens
Quick definition

Optimising content to be the direct answer surfaced by answer engines and voice assistants.

01
Foundations
New to SEO? Start here.

AEO is about winning the single answer rather than a ranked list — the response a voice assistant reads aloud or an answer engine displays directly. It reframes the goal from "where do we rank?" to "are we the answer?" It overlaps heavily with featured-snippet optimisation and with GEO, but the framing is answer-first.

02
Practitioner
Doing the work day to day.

Organise content around the exact questions people ask, and answer each one cleanly in roughly 40–50 words before expanding. Use clear question-style headings, FAQ markup where appropriate, and plain, unambiguous phrasing a machine can read aloud without stumbling. Mine People Also Ask, support tickets, and sales-call questions for the real phrasing your audience uses.

03
Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

As search fragments across assistants, chat interfaces, and in-app answer boxes, owning the answer becomes as valuable as owning the ranking — but the answer slot is winner-take-most, so the bar is higher. Senior work is deciding which questions are worth being the definitive answer to (usually those closest to a decision or a branded need) and building the structured, entity-clear content that answer engines prefer, while accepting that some answers will not drive a click at all.

DKDavor’s take

AEO, GEO, and featured snippets are three windows onto the same craft: answer one precise question so cleanly that a machine can hand it over verbatim. Master that and you are ready for whatever the next interface is called.

Common mistakes
Writing meandering intros before the answer, so no clean answer exists to extract.
Guessing the questions instead of pulling real phrasing from PAA and customer conversations.
Chasing answer slots that give away the whole value with no path back to you.
In practice
Structuring a page around the exact questions in "People Also Ask", each answered in 40–50 words, positions it to be the read-aloud answer.
