AI Overviews

FoundationsPractitionerSenior lens
Quick definition

Google’s AI-generated answer summaries that appear at the top of many SERPs, synthesising multiple sources.

01
Foundations
New to SEO? Start here.

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google now places at the top of many results pages (they grew out of the Search Generative Experience). Google stitches an answer together from several sources and links to them. For some queries this answers the question outright, so the user never clicks — the "zero-click" effect — while creating a new prize: being one of the few sources cited inside the overview.

02
Practitioner
Doing the work day to day.

Being cited correlates with the same fundamentals that win featured snippets: a trusted, well-structured page that clearly answers the sub-questions around a topic. Structure content in clean question-and-answer blocks, cover the related follow-ups, and keep facts unambiguous and current. Start monitoring which of your queries trigger an AI Overview and whether you are cited — this is now core reporting, not a curiosity.

03
Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

AI Overviews change the unit economics of informational SEO: impressions may hold while clicks fall, so you have to re-baseline expectations and shift some value measurement to brand exposure and citation share. The strategic response is to double down where clicks still happen (commercial and transactional intent, complex evaluations) and to compete for citation on informational terms rather than mourning the lost click. Reporting that only counts clicks will make a healthy channel look like it is collapsing.

DKDavor’s take

AI Overviews are not the death of SEO — they are a repricing of it. Informational clicks get scarcer; being the cited authority gets more valuable. Adjust your metrics before your CFO panics at a click-through chart that lost its context.

Common mistakes
Judging performance on clicks alone while AI Overviews quietly shift value to citations and impressions.
Ignoring whether you are cited in overviews for your core topics.
Abandoning informational content entirely instead of restructuring it to be citation-worthy.
In practice
For "how to reduce churn", an AI Overview may cite three articles; the sites quoted see brand exposure even when the click goes elsewhere.
