Anchor Text

FoundationsPractitionerSenior lens
Quick definition

The visible, clickable words in a link — a strong relevance signal for the page being linked to.

Foundations
New to SEO? Start here.

Anchor text is the clickable, visible text of a link. Search engines read it as a description of what the linked page is about, so "crawl budget guide" tells them far more than "click here". This applies to both internal links and backlinks.

02
Practitioner
Doing the work day to day.

For internal links, use descriptive, keyword-relevant anchors to reinforce what each page should rank for — it is a free, fully-controlled relevance signal. For backlinks, natural variation is healthier than repetition: a profile stuffed with the same exact-match commercial anchor looks manipulated and can trigger penalties. Aim for a natural mix of branded, exact, partial, and generic anchors.

03
Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

Senior work treats anchor text as a distribution to manage, not a per-link decision. Over-optimised exact-match anchor profiles are a classic footprint of manipulative link building; a healthy profile skews branded and contextual. Internally, anchor strategy is a lever for steering topical relevance across a cluster — worth planning deliberately at scale rather than leaving to whoever writes the post.

DKDavor’s take

Internal anchor text is free relevance you fully control, and most sites waste it on "read more" and "here". Meanwhile they obsess over the anchor text of backlinks they cannot control. Fix the ratio.

Common mistakes
Using generic anchors like "click here" that describe nothing.
Building backlinks with repetitive exact-match commercial anchors.
Ignoring internal anchor text entirely while fixating on external links.
In practice
Changing internal links pointing to a page from "learn more" to "technical SEO audit" reinforces the exact term that page is trying to rank for.
