Internal Linking

FoundationsPractitionerSenior lens
Quick definition

Links between pages on the same domain that distribute authority and define site structure for users and crawlers.

01
Foundations
New to SEO? Start here.

Internal links are links from one page on your site to another. They do three jobs at once: they help crawlers discover pages, they pass ranking signals (often called link equity or PageRank) between pages, and they tell search engines how your topics relate to each other. The clickable anchor text is a strong relevance cue.

02
Practitioner
Doing the work day to day.

Link with descriptive anchor text ("crawl budget", not "click here"), and deliberately funnel authority from your strongest pages to the ones you want to lift. Build the structure around topic clusters: a pillar links down to its cluster pages and each cluster page links back up and across to siblings. Hunt down orphan pages (pages with no internal links pointing to them) — they are effectively invisible to both users and crawlers.

03
Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

A deliberate internal-linking architecture is often the highest-ROI lever in SEO precisely because it is entirely within your control — no outreach, no waiting on other sites. Manage anchor-text distribution and link depth as levers, keep important pages within a few clicks of the homepage, and revisit the graph whenever you publish: a strong new asset should immediately be wired into the relevant cluster. At scale, model internal PageRank flow rather than eyeballing it.

DKDavor’s take

Everyone chases backlinks and ignores the links they already fully control. I have moved pages onto page one with nothing but a smarter internal-linking pass. It is the most underrated work in SEO.

Common mistakes
Publishing new content and never linking to it from existing relevant pages (creating orphans).
Using generic anchor text like "read more" that tells search engines nothing.
Burying important pages five or six clicks deep in the architecture.
In practice
Linking a new bottom-of-funnel comparison page from three high-authority blog posts can move it into the top 10 within weeks, with no new backlinks.
