Pillar Page

FoundationsPractitionerSenior lens
Quick definition

A comprehensive, broadly-scoped page that anchors a topic cluster and links to its supporting articles.

Foundations
New to SEO? Start here.

A pillar page is the hub of a topic cluster. It targets a broad, high-volume "head" term and covers the whole topic at a survey level, then links out to the deeper cluster pages for the details. It is the page you would send someone who wants the complete overview of a subject.

02
Practitioner
Doing the work day to day.

Make the pillar a genuinely useful standalone resource, not a thin table of contents — it has to earn links and rank on its own merits for the competitive umbrella query. Structure it so a reader can either get the full picture in one place or jump to the cluster page that answers their specific question. Then use it as an authority distributor, passing internal link equity down to the cluster pages that convert.

03
Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

Pillars are your topical anchors and your best link magnets, so choose them where the business actually wants to win, not just where volume is highest. The judgment call is scope: too broad and it says nothing; too narrow and it is just another cluster page. Revisit and expand pillars over time — they should be living assets that grow as your authority in the topic grows.

DKDavor’s take

A pillar page that is just a linked list of headings fools nobody. It has to be the best single overview of the topic on the internet, or it will not earn the links that make the whole cluster work.

Common mistakes
Building a pillar that is a thin hub of links with no substance of its own.
Targeting a head term the business has no realistic chance of ranking for.
Never updating the pillar as the cluster and the topic evolve.
In practice
A "SaaS SEO" pillar ranks for the head term while linking down to product-led SEO, BOFU content, and programmatic SEO cluster pages.
