Conversion Rate

FoundationsPractitionerSenior lens
Quick definition

The percentage of visitors who complete a desired action, such as a signup, demo, or purchase.

Foundations

Conversion rate is the share of visitors who complete the action you care about — a signup, a demo request, a purchase — calculated as conversions divided by visitors or sessions. It is where traffic turns into value; traffic that never converts is just cost.

02
Practitioner
Doing the work day to day.

Measure it per landing page and per intent, not just sitewide, because the averages hide everything useful. High-intent bottom-of-funnel pages should convert far better than blog posts; when they do not, the culprit is usually message match, page friction, or a weak call to action rather than traffic volume. A modest conversion lift on traffic you already have often beats months of chasing more visitors, because it compounds across everything you rank for.

03
Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

Conversion rate is where SEO and CRO become one system: SEO earns the visit, conversion optimisation makes it pay, and together they raise revenue per session instead of just session count. Senior practitioners connect conversion rate to traffic quality (a "falling" conversion rate is often rising volume of lower-intent traffic, which can be fine) and optimise the funnel end to end rather than treating rankings and conversions as separate departments.

DKDavor’s take

The fastest revenue win in most SEO programs is not more traffic — it is converting the traffic you already earned. A half-point lift on your money pages can outperform a quarter of new content. Look down the funnel before you look for more clicks.

Common mistakes
Optimising sitewide conversion rate instead of the specific money pages that matter.
Reading a falling conversion rate as failure when it is really more low-intent volume.
Treating SEO and conversion optimisation as separate, unconnected efforts.
In practice
Lifting a pricing page from 3% to 4.5% conversion adds 50% more signups from the identical traffic — no new SEO required.
