Zero-Click Search

Also known as: no-click search
FoundationsPractitionerSenior lens
Quick definition

A search that is answered on the results page itself, so the user never clicks through to a website.

01
Foundations
New to SEO? Start here.

A zero-click search is one where the user gets their answer directly on the results page — from a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, an AI Overview, or a calculator — and never clicks through to a website. A large and growing share of all searches now end this way.

02
Practitioner
Doing the work day to day.

Zero-click reshapes what "success" means. For some queries (weather, definitions, quick facts) the click was never valuable anyway; for others, being the source cited in the answer still builds brand exposure even without the visit. Adapt by targeting queries where clicks still happen (complex, commercial, transactional), and by competing to be the cited answer where they do not — while re-baselining expectations for informational content.

03
Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

Senior practitioners stop treating clicks as the only currency and start valuing impressions, citations, and brand exposure appropriately — otherwise a healthy channel looks like it is collapsing on a click-through chart. The strategic response is a deliberate portfolio split: defend and grow click-earning commercial intent, compete for citation on zero-click informational intent, and educate leadership that visibility without a click still has value in an AI-answer world.

DKDavor’s take

Zero-click search terrifies people measuring only clicks. But being the answer everyone sees — even without a visit — is brand advertising you did not pay for. Adjust what you count before you conclude SEO is dying.

Common mistakes
Judging every query by clicks when the answer now lives on the SERP.
Abandoning informational content instead of competing to be its cited source.
Failing to re-educate stakeholders as impressions and clicks diverge.
In practice
A definition query answered by a featured snippet drives no click, yet the cited brand still earns visibility and authority in front of every searcher.
