Conversion

FoundationsPractitionerSenior lens
Quick definition

Any completed action that matters to the business — a signup, demo, purchase, or lead.

01
Foundations
New to SEO? Start here.

A conversion is any action you have defined as valuable being completed: a purchase, a demo request, a trial signup, a newsletter subscription, a form fill. It is the point where a visitor does the thing you actually wanted them to do, rather than just browsing.

02
Practitioner
Doing the work day to day.

Define conversions deliberately and distinguish macro conversions (the primary goal, like a purchase or demo) from micro conversions (smaller steps like a guide download or email signup that predict the macro one). Set them up cleanly in GA4, tie each to real business value, and track them per landing page and channel so SEO’s contribution is visible rather than buried in a sessions chart.

03
Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

Senior practitioners align conversion definitions with the revenue model and the sales motion, and resist the vanity of counting soft conversions as if they were sales. In long B2B cycles they connect on-site conversions to downstream pipeline and revenue through the CRM, because a "conversion" that never becomes an opportunity is a metric that flatters marketing and misleads the business.

DKDavor’s take

Half the "conversion" dashboards I see count newsletter signups next to closed deals as if they were equal. Define what actually moves the business, value the rest as leading indicators, and never confuse the two in a board deck.

Common mistakes
Counting soft micro conversions as if they carried the value of a sale.
Not connecting on-site conversions to downstream pipeline in long sales cycles.
Leaving conversion tracking misconfigured, so SEO’s impact is invisible.
In practice
A SaaS treats demo requests as the macro conversion and guide downloads as a micro conversion that reliably precedes them — and optimises for both accordingly.
