Product Qualified Lead (PQL)

Abbreviated: PQL

Quick definition

A lead who has experienced product value first-hand — typically via a free trial or freemium plan.

A product qualified lead is a user who has already experienced meaningful value from your product — usually through a free trial or freemium plan — and shown behaviour that signals readiness to buy. Unlike a marketing qualified lead (interested based on content) or a sales qualified lead, a PQL has actually used the product and hit an activation moment.

Doing the work day to day.

PQLs matter in product-led SaaS because they convert far better than traditional leads — they are not curious, they are already getting value. For SEO, this connects to product-led SEO and free-tool strategies: organic that drives sign-ups into a free product creates PQLs, so the goal becomes attracting fits who will activate, not just people who download a guide. Define the activation actions that qualify a PQL and optimise the path to them.

Senior lens
Strategy, trade-offs, judgement.

Senior practitioners in product-led companies orient acquisition around PQL generation and activation rate, recognising that organic which drives high-fit trial sign-ups produces the most efficient pipeline. They align SEO, product, and lifecycle around the activation moment, measure organic by PQLs and their conversion rather than raw leads, and treat the free-product experience as part of the acquisition funnel that content feeds.

DKDavor’s take

A PQL beats an MQL every time — one has felt the value, the other has only read about it. In product-led SaaS, the SEO job shifts from generating leads to generating the right trial sign-ups that actually activate.

Common mistakes
Measuring product-led organic by raw leads instead of PQLs and activation.
Driving trial sign-ups with no regard for fit, so few ever activate.
Ignoring the activation moment that separates a curious trial from a real PQL.
In practice
A free tool ranks organically and funnels well-fit users into a trial; those who hit the activation action become PQLs that convert far above average.
