The input or question a user gives an AI system — the AI-era equivalent of a search query.
A prompt is the input someone gives an AI system — the question or instruction typed into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or an AI search box. In the AI era, prompts are becoming the new queries: longer, more conversational, and often multi-part compared to the short keyword phrases people type into traditional search.
The practical shift is that people ask AI systems full, contextual questions ("what is the best analytics tool for a small ecommerce store on Shopify?") rather than clipped keywords. So content that answers complete, natural-language questions — with the context and qualifiers real prompts contain — is better positioned to be surfaced and cited. Mine real prompts, not just keyword tools, to understand demand.
Senior practitioners are building a prompt-research discipline alongside keyword research, because the query surface is fragmenting across chat interfaces where classic volume data does not exist. They study how their audience actually phrases problems to AI, structure content to satisfy conversational and follow-up intent, and accept that measuring this demand requires new methods — the old keyword-volume playbook only sees part of the picture now.
